Nine AI Agents, One Admin
The headline feature is Shopify Connectors — integrations that let merchants manage products, inventory, orders, and performance data from inside an AI chat. The supported agents at launch include ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Duet, Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini, Grok, Grok Bot, Muse, and Perplexity.
The practical upside: a merchant can ask their AI agent of choice “what’s my best-selling SKU this week?” or “update the inventory on product X” without touching the Shopify admin directly. It’s less about replacing the dashboard and more about meeting merchants where they already work.
Shop Pay Goes Inside the Chatbot
Shoppers can now complete purchases through Shop Pay without leaving a conversation with Claude, Muse, or other supported agents. A new file called Shop.md turns any compatible AI agent into a personal shopper — capable of searching over a billion products and completing checkout using a shopper’s existing Shop Pay account.
A few things worth noting about the security model:
- The buyer stays in control at all times
- Card details are never shared with the agent
- Purchases are secured with tokens from Mastercard, Visa, and Discover
- Shop Pay is also available for brands not on Shopify through Claude Duet, Grok Bot, and Instinct
Shopify’s VP of Product Vanessa Lee framed the consumer behavior shift clearly: agentic shopping isn’t browsing — it’s hunting. Shoppers using AI agents already know what they want. Reducing checkout friction at that moment is the entire point.
Merchants Control What Agents Know
Handing AI agents access to your store raises an obvious question: what exactly are they telling shoppers?
Shopify’s answer is a new Knowledge Base page in the admin (under Sales channels > Agentic). Merchants review and approve the facts agents can access — return policies, shipping destinations, gift services. Shopify drafts the initial content from the storefront, but nothing reaches an agent without explicit merchant sign-off.
A Catalog eligibility view also shows whether a store qualifies for Shopify Catalog — the product database agents draw from — and flags anything that needs fixing.
The order and customer relationship stay with the merchant. Any sale through an AI channel lands in the admin like any other order, with full customer details intact.
Sidekick Gets Smarter
Shopify’s built-in AI assistant has been rebuilt with the ability to run calculations, write code, search the web, and retain context across sessions. Daily Sidekick sessions have reportedly grown 4.2x year over year.
Two new features stand out:
- Canvas — puts the entire online store into a single editable view, letting merchants redesign with Sidekick in real time (currently in early access)
- SimGym — stages multiple proposed changes simultaneously for merchant review before anything goes live
Sidekick now also understands the apps in a merchant’s stack and can pull in web research about their industry when making recommendations. The vision, per Lee: being able to completely overhaul your store in an hour, just by talking.
Fraud Protection at Network Scale
Shopify Protect now draws on signals across Shopify’s entire merchant network. A card flagged at one store is already known when it appears at another — Shopify Payments reportedly blocks more than 12,000 high-risk payments per minute across the network.
Merchants can write and backtest their own fraud rules through the Rule Builder. For chargebacks, Shopify uses AI to generate dispute responses tailored to the specific bank and reason code, and automatically attaches carrier proof of delivery when needed. Delivery photos from FedEx now appear directly on orders as dispute evidence.
The platform claims up to 1.6x higher dispute win rates by category, and 60% more wins on “product not received” claims specifically.
Shop Gets a Web Home
Shop.com launches as a web destination with shoppable posts, editorial content, and personalized sections — extending Shop’s reach to shoppers who haven’t downloaded the app. Web traffic to Shop is reportedly growing faster than app traffic.
A universal checkout feature lets shoppers add products from multiple merchants to a single cart and check out in one transaction. Carts now sync bidirectionally between Shop and a merchant’s online store, and across devices for logged-in shoppers.
Instagram content can be connected to Shop, automatically syncing reels and carousels into shoppable posts. Merchant branding also syncs automatically to their Shop landing page.
Other Updates Worth Scanning
New payment methods added to Shopify Payments: Alipay, WeChat Pay, MB WAY, OXXO, Satispay, Scalapay, and GrabPay — most available online and in-person via POS.
Australian merchants get more payout currencies and early access to Shop Pay Installments with longer-term interest-free options.
POS improvements include in-store customer recognition across the Shopify network, a recent carts feature so any staff member can pick up a sale from any device, and faster cash and split payment flows.
Campaign Autopilot — Shopify’s AI marketing tool — now supports Microsoft Advertising, Snapchat, and X Ads, and has rolled out to all merchants. Shop Campaigns has expanded to 35+ new markets including the UK, Australia, and the EU.
Developers get a Catalog API that now includes products from non-Shopify brands, WebMCP tools for building agent-native shopping experiences, and a refreshed Dev Dashboard. The Catalog API is positioned as the standout opportunity: personalized search across a billion products, with no comparable alternative.
The Useful Takeaway
Shopify is making a structural argument: the network effect of millions of merchants and hundreds of millions of buyers creates something no single retailer — however large — can replicate on their own.
For merchants, the immediate question isn’t whether agentic commerce will matter. It’s whether your store is set up to be found and purchased through it. That means checking Catalog eligibility, reviewing your Knowledge Base content, and understanding how Shop Pay fits into your checkout flow.
The tools are live. The agents are already shopping.
